Location

The location of the Scripps campus is, quite simply, beyond compare. It’s set in a picturesque small town, near a world-class city and a short drive from natural beauty of all types.

Our City

Claremont Village With just 35,000 people, the quintessential college town of Claremont is known as the “City of Trees and Ph.D.s” due to its large number of trees and residents with doctorates. The center of Claremont is The Village, a strollable downtown area where café tables dot the sidewalks and shops invite browsing on tree-lined streets. A movie theater, jazz club, and weekly farmers’ market provide entertainment.

Southern California

Southern California mapIf you like the excitement of a big city, the Scripps campus is 35 miles away from downtown Los Angeles, known for its concert venues, museums, and world-class attractions. L.A. is an expansive city with many unique neighborhoods to explore, from Chinatown to Hollywood, Malibu to Pasadena. In addition to the zoos, museums, and performing arts centers, there are famous attractions such as Disneyland (just 38 miles away), Magic Mountain, and Universal Studios. The New Student Program at Scripps takes students to many of these destinations to help them get acquainted with L.A. But you can also get there on your own by hopping on the Metro commuter train that links many destinations in Los Angeles. Of course, you’re not limited to L.A. San Diego is two hours to the south, San Francisco is eight hours to the north, and dozens of visit-worthy seaside and valley towns await weekend road trips.

Great Outdoors

Within an hour of campus, you can take a dip in the ocean, ski in the mountains, or hike in the desert. Our wide, sandy beaches spring to mind with the mention of California. Newport Beach is only 43 miles away, and there are so many others to explore, such as Crystal Cove, Laguna Beach, or Santa Monica. Yet the campus is set at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains, with nearby opportunities for hiking, skiing, and fishing. Less than an hour away is the fascinating landscape of the desert, where you can visit Palm Springs and Joshua Tree National Park. Our setting is the perfect central location to discover all the different types of terrain in California. And with our famously sunny weather, you can take full advantage of the outdoors year ’round.

Weather

Our Southern California sun is legendary, typically shining 329 days a year. The average high temperature is 77 degrees, and the average low is 51 degrees — it’s generally very pleasant. July and August are the warmest months, and February the wettest. This temperate weather makes Scripps the perfect place to ride a bike, play outdoor sports, toss a Frisbee, study on the lawn, or lounge in the pool.
